ABOUT ME |
Bowmore not only has the distinction of being one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, it’s one of the remaining few that still operates its own floor maltings.
Officially founded on the Hebridean island of Islay in 1779, Bowmore distillery sits on the shores of Loch Indaal, its legendary on-site maturation warehouse, the No.1 Vaults, doubling up as one of the town’s sea walls.
Bowmore’s traditional floor maltings, where germinating barley is turned by hand and then dried in a kiln over a peat fire, gives its whisky a more intensely aromatic quality.
Bowmore has long produced a medium-peated style of single malt, which gives a balance of heathery smoke, maritime minerality and juicy stone fruit. When matured in ex-Sherry casks, its character develops notes of chocolate, bonfire smoke and dark, dried fruits.
While much of Bowmore’s limited edition whisky is considered collectible, with some editions like the rare Black Bowmore series commanding as much as £400,000, its core range represents great value.
This Bowmore 18-year-old embodies an earthy, heathery smokiness alongside rich, sherried fruity notes and creamy chocolate caramels – a perfect fireside whisky.
