ABOUT ME |
The town of Tobermory on Mull is distinctive for its tranquil coastal setting with rows of colourful buildings and fishermans’ cottages lining the harbour. Just five years after it was founded as a fishing village in 1788, Tobermory became home to its first and only whisky distillery.
Originally named Ledaig (pronounced ‘letch-ick’), Tobermory distillery’s journey has been undeniably tumultuous, facing over two centuries of openings and closures under multiple owners, all the while intermittently producing both peated and unpeated whisky.
Today, under the steady ownership of Burn Stewart Distillers, Tobermory has become a thriving distillery, and one of a handful in Scotland producing both peated and unpeated single malt. While its unpeated expression is bottled under the distillery name, its heavily-peated releases are labelled Ledaig – a nod to its original moniker.
There are just three expressions in Ledaig’s core range: the classic 10-year-old, a Rioja-finished no-age-statement as part of the new Sinclair Series, and the award-winning 18-year-old.
Named The Whisky Exchange’s ‘Whisky of the Year 2023’, Ledaig 18 is an intense, smoky whisky that balances delicate jasmine and eucalyptus aromas with notes of crisp green apple and sweet toffee.
Having matured for 16 years in ex-Bourbon barrels, its finished for a further 24 months in ex-Sherry casks for a rich, warming experience.
One of the most affordable Scotch whiskies of this age, Ledaig 18 is not only a masterclass in balancing spirit, smoke and cask, it’s a testament to Tobermory distillery’s enduring resilience.
