ABOUT ME |
Ayrshire’s Lochlea farm is well known for being the home of a young Robert Burns in the late 18th century, but now the quiet, rural site is set to become famous for another Scottish icon – whisky.
Lochlea distillery has been quietly producing a bright, robust and fruity single malt spirit since 2018, firstly under the supervision of industry legend Malcolm Rennie and more recently by ex-Laphroaig distillery manager John Campbell.
Lochlea is a true field to cask operation – the barley is sourced from the surrounding family-owned farms, with leftover draff fed to local cattle, while water is raised from aquifers in the limestone rock beneath the farm.
While the distillery’s first whisky was released in January 2022, this summer saw the launch of Lochlea’s first core expression as an homage to the whisky’s core ingredient: Our Barley.
Matured in a mixture of first-fill Bourbon barrels, rejuvenated casks and oloroso Sherry butts, Our Barley is light, sweet and fruity with notes of pears, boiled sweets, rye bread and cream soda.
