ABOUT ME |
If you’re familiar with Canadian whisky you may already have tried Lot 40, the 100% rye, column and pot-distilled whisky from Hiram Walker.
Produced at the Hiram Walker distillery in Windsor, Ontario from a traditional recipe passed down seven generations, Lot 40 has something of a cult following.
The whisky was first launched in 1998 by then master blender Michael Booth, who based the recipe on one created by his seventh generation forefather, Joshua Booth. Michael named it after the plot of land given to him when Joshua emigrated to Canada, and Lot 40 became an instant hit.
Sadly it was discontinued in the UK in the 2000s, causing a stir among enthusiasts, before being reintroduced in 2012.
While much Canadian whisky tends to be softer in character, Lot 40’s rye is known for its bold, toffee-spice flavour, which is much more in keeping with the style of rye whisky made south of the border in the US.
In 2021 the distillery released a bolder expression, Lot 40 Dark Oak, which is aged in new American oak and finished in heavily charred new oak barrels. The extra maturation emboldens Lot 40’s classically fruity and spicy rye character, imparting black treacle sweetness and a charcoal smokiness that’s sure to delight fans of this rich style.
