ABOUT ME |
Speyside's Tamdhu distillery has long been a workhorse providing fruity single malt whisky for blends like Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse, but in recent years has emerged as a rich, heavily Sherried whisky in its own right.
The distillery was founded in 1897 on the banks of the River Spey, by a group of whisky makers headed by William Grant (of Glenfiddich fame).
For over 100 years its fragrant, fruity spirit was earmarked almost entirely for blends. It wasn’t until Ian MacLeod Distillers bought the site in 2012 that Tamdhu began a new lease of life as one of Speyside’s most exciting single malts.
Today the distillery exclusively matures its whisky in oloroso Sherry casks, giving this rich, bold single malt signature notes of Christmas cake, cherries and spice.
Tamdhu’s core range starts with a sweet, creamy 10 Year Old, rising through 12-, 15- and 18-year-old expressions, topped off with regular batch-strength and limited edition releases.
In 2021 Tamdhu launched a new limited edition series, Quercus Alba Distinction, with an exclusive focus on whisky matured in first-fill American oak Sherry casks.
The casks used for Tamdhu’s Quercus Alba Distinction series are constructed of American oak and seasoned with oloroso Sherry before being filled with Tamdhu spirit.
This second edition was released in November 2022. It’s a fascinating example of the subtle nuances imparted by American oak, displaying rich notes of figs, damsons, dark chocolate and orange zest.
